how to install firefox 3.6.15
 

I have a scond hand eee 701 4g pc which I think has the original xandros o/s. At the moment I havefirefox 2 installed and wish to upgrade. I have dowloaded firefox 3.6 15 to my home file but am unable to install. I have tried yurenju's method but get the message - no such file or directory. I would really appreciate some vey simply explained help. Oldie.

Xandros is a discontinued distribution that was last released in 2007. I would strongly recommend to install a recent distribution, so that you get bugfixes and security updates. Almost all new distributions come with a recent Firefox pre-installed. If not it is easily installable.
I would consider to try Puppy Linux on this machine.

why not try a full and lightweight distro, like http://crunchbanglinux.org/

download, extract, create a desktop shortcut to launch it. Nothing to install.

Although why not try Firefox 4.0 or as others have already suggested a newer distro.

Debian, Crunchbang or antix will fit and run just fine on that model.

Unless you replace the OS, you're stuck with Firefox 2.

Thanks to all who hve replied. All vey helpful. It seems as though I must upgrade the operating system.. I am very new to all this business as you will have gathered! Does the new system automatically download and install if I click the download button? What happens to the old o/s. Is that removed in some way? Do I need extra 'space'? I would appreciate very simple (in computing terms) explanations. Many thanks

The old OS will simply be overwritten by the new one. The drive might as well be blank or full or random data, it doesn't matter.
