Usually you install Windows first, since as you saw, it will overwrite the bootloader and not allow you to get into Linux anymore. You'll need to boot into Linux using the install disc and reload the boot loader.

step by step
DID you READ the red hat install instructions????
https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/...erprise_Linux/
( the old rhel5 is in the middle of the page)

this IS the OLD rhel5.4 and NOT the current in the OLD 5 series is 5.8 ???

and the CURRENT RHEL is 6.3

also red hat is NOT FREE
you MUST buy a support license to do anything with it

BUY THE REQUIRED support contract !!!
the standard 1 year is $299 / year
https://www.redhat.com/apps/store/desktop/

and there are 12 years of guides for dual booting with XP
( please search Google)

any of the 10 year old guides will do

just the bit about using a 3.5 in floppy is not good
new hardware dose not have a 3.5 in.floppy drive any more .

so
seeing as you HAVE to buy a support contract

you might want to use it
search the red hat knowledge base for "dual boot xp"
https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/search
( you will have to register with red hat first and buy the license)

OR
install one of the FREE rebuilds like...
CentOS 6.3
or
ScientificLinux6.3
BUT be warned
a SERVER CLASS Operating system is NOT i REPEAT -- NOT a good choice for a HOME everyday computer
nor good on a laptop
