update:
Ztoracat- I did manage to follow through all the steps on https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/...h10k/backports, but still no wireless :(

When I run lsmod | grep compat as per step 10,
I get
compat 22752 3 cfg80211,mac80211,ath10k_pci
whereas on the webpage it looks like I am supposed to get the output
compat 36104 6 iwldvm,iwlwifi,ath10k_pci,ath10k_core,mac80211,cfg80211

alhtough iwldvm and iwlwifi seem to be drivers for intel wireless chips, so it shouldn't matter??

Sorry it didn't work for you.

Give ardvark71 time to read through the output of the cmd that you ran for him.
I'm sure he'll let us know what he thinks could be going on.

p.s. how do I copy the terminal output/codes into the nice little box like you guys are doing?
In the box where you write your message is a smiley face icon, a paper clip and etc.
Click on the pound sign (#) and when you do you will get what looks like this:
{code} {/code}
Place your cursor in between the code tags left click and paste.-:)

@ardvark71:

Do you think that his MSI machine requires the firmware?

Tar balls are not my cup of tea:-)

I have been trying to figure out how to use the make command but so far I don't really understand it....
I know how you feel.
The general ./configure, make, make install cmd's still give me a hard time.
Usually the tar ball comes with a ReadMe file or an Install file that explains how to install the tar bz.

I found members that have the same Killer e2200 card.
I'm sorry, davdo91; I don't have experience on how to patch the alx kernel driver.

Hi davdo91...

Make sure you click "Go Advanced" at the bottom of the message window where you write your reply and then click the "#" button right above it. You will then see: [ CODE ][ /CODE ], the put the text you want to see "coded" between the two. ;)

Ok, concerning your wireless adapter, please verify you are using kernel version 3.16 by using the command below...

Code:

uname -r
If you are, please continue reading below. If not, stop reading and post back which kernel you're using. :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found some important information in an Ubuntu bug report --->here!<--- You might want to glance through the entire thread.

From what I understand in post 177, this is a firmware issue. :(

From what I see, you have two options if you need wifi:

1. Wait for the next release of Linux Mint, which has, at least, the 3.20 kernel, as mentioned in post 197 and use a USB wireless adapter like the one here.

2. Install the latest stable kernel mentioned in post 201. This might be easier than trying to compile your own, which also covered starting at post 188. Bear in mind that using either method might mess up your copy of Mint but if you don't mind getting your "hands dirty," you can give one of these methods a shot. Just read through this section of the report carefully. ;)

Hope this helps... :)

Hi...

From what I've read, yes. Take a look at my post to the OP. :)

Just as a heads up, the "alx" driver is for the ethernet adapter, not the wireless. The OP said his ethernet connection worked fine. ;)

hey ztoracat, ardvark71,
looks like I will be using a usb stick for now :(
Tried pretty much every solution out there and every time I run into errors that are just way over my head
Than you guys for helping though. I appreciated it.

Do you mean you'll be using a usb dongle that will help your wifi to work?

I used one for a while and it worked well.

Hi...

You're welcome but can you tell us what you tried to do?

Regards...

davdo91 07-24-2015 08:55 PM

@ztoracat
yeah, i already like using linux better than windows :)

@ardvark71
okay, I tried installing new kernel as per post 201, and I seem to have installed all the firmware, but that didn't work out. This is the result from running
Code:

modinfo -F firmware ath10k_pci
I get
Code:

ath10k/QCA988X/hw2.0/board.bin
ath10k/QCA988X/hw2.0/firmware-3.bin
ath10k/QCA988X/hw2.0/firmware-2.bin
ath10k/QCA988X/hw2.0/firmware.bin

So I moved on to post 115
I got up to step 6, which gives me like a hundred lines of these and then eventually fails.
Code:

  INSTALL kernel/torture.ko
cp: cannot stat ‘kernel/torture.ko’: No such file or directory
Can't read module

 DEPMOD  4.2.0-rc3-wl-ath
sh ./arch/x86/boot/install.sh 4.2.0-rc3-wl-ath arch/x86/boot/bzImage \
                System.map "/boot"

 *** Missing file: arch/x86/boot/bzImage
*** You need to run "make" before "make install".

make[1]: *** [install] Error 1
make: *** [install] Error 2

davdo91 07-24-2015 09:21 PM

I also tried post 150

I got up to running
Code:

make -j8
and I get
Code:

make[1]: *** No rule to make target `mm/filemap.o', needed by `mm/built-in.o'.  Stop.
make: *** [mm] Error 2
make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
  CHK    include/generated/compile.h
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `fs/binfmt_script.o', needed by `fs/built-in.o'.  Stop.
make[1]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
make: *** [fs] Error 2
make: *** wait: No child processes.  Stop.

Hi...

Ok, let's pause here for a second and confirm that the new kernel is up and running. If you would, please post the output of...

Code:

uname -r
Thanks! :)

davdo91 07-25-2015 08:57 PM

for sure
here's the output
Code:

Linux david-GS60-2QE 4.2.0-rc3-wl-ath #1 SMP Sun Jul 26 10:29:58 KST 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
It also looks like I've lost ethernet too after compiling that kernel.
I ran
Code:

ifconfig -a
and I get only get lo. No eth0 or wlan0

ardvark71 07-25-2015 10:13 PM

Hi...

Ugh, well at least it appears you're running the newer kernel. I thought that by installing this kernel, the problems would take care of themselves but.... ;)

Well, let's see if we can fix your ethernet connection first. Please confirm that your system sees it by posting the results of...

Code:

lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2
Also, what does lsmod say?

Code:

lsmod
Thanks!

davdo91 07-25-2015 11:36 PM

thankfully it does recognize the hardware.

Code:

04:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Qualcomm Atheros Killer E2200 Gigabit Ethernet Controller [1969:e091] (rev 13)
