Unhappy how to install applications?

i am very new to linux,please somebody suggest me how to install apllications in linux, fedora core 6!

the command to start with would be 'yum install 'package''

although fedora 6 is several generations out of date and isnt supported anymore
not to say you wont find help for fedora 6
e but alot of the spftware repositories for fedora 6 will start disapearing
