How to install a program that comes as a .i686 file? There's no 'how to install' file

Apologies - serious newbie question alert.

How do I install an application that comes as a .i686 file? I'm running SUSE 9.1.

Searching suggests I should look for a "how to install" file that comes from the application provider, but none exists. I presume this is source code and I have to create a .rpm file? I have no clue how to do that. Please be gentle.

Thanks.

HI

Are you sure the syntax is correct? Suse uses .rpm to install programs. It could could be that the .rpm was somehhow left off the file.

If this is possibly true, try to add .rpm to the package you are trying to install and install like a normal rpm.

Hope this helps

If this is indeed a source rpm, you will need to rebuild it into an installable rpm. The instructions for doing this can be found here:

Hope this helps

That's strange. Where did you get it? Maybe it's a binary (just cd to the directory and type `./Whatever.i686' at the prompt).
