how to i update & customise linux?

hi all...
i finally got linux installed on my system!!! whew. After successive failures with fedora 4, suse 10 and ubuntu, finally i saw success with mandrake linux. i couldnt get my hands on the latest vesion, so i had to make do with ver 9.2

anyhow, here are a few things i need help with....

1. i need to update my gtk version. how do i do that? i tried to install adobe acrobat reader, and i got a message saying that i need a gtk version > 2.4. same goes for installing themes for gnome.

2. i can access my windows ntfs partition after i installed captive ntfs (http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/). but the site says that i should also be able to write to the ntfs drive, but everytime i try to do so, i get a write protected error. how do i resolve that?

3. i am using the firefox browser, but it is not the default browser in linux. i did a bit of searching, and saw that i can change it from the gnome->preferred applications list, if i change it to 'firefox %s'. but when i do so, the settings do not get applied. the mozilla site database says that i need to have the 'symlink the firefox script must be placed in one of the default PATH's'. how to do i do that? (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Default_browser)

4. when browsing the web, the fonts that i see on screen are not smooth. they are quite rugged. how to i change that apperence?

5. for instand messaging, i use aMSN for MSN messenger, which works with no problems. but yahoo messenger for unix, which i got from the yahoo site does not seem to work. the program opens, but does not connect. is there any alternative messenger client i can use? (i've also tried gaim, but with no luck).

thats it for now i guess...

thankx...
peace..

hi there,

I can't answer all your questions, but I can help with one.

to find your PATHs, just type this in a terminal:
Code:
echo $PATH
to install a symlink into one of those, as root type
Code:
ln -s /directory/to/firefox/executable /one/of/your/PATHs/firefox
i generally use the PATH /usr/local/bin for my symlinks (to firefox etc). to find anything on your hard drive called firefox (for example the existing symlink) you can search for it using this:
Code:
find / -iname firefox
then you could remove that one, and replace it with a new one, pointing to your new firefox directory with the above code.

with regard writing to ntfs, I've not heard of captive ntfs, but as far as I'm aware, writing to ntfs from linux is problematic since ntfs is proprietry and microsoft have not given out information on how the ntfs filesystem works, although it seems that that software emulated windows' own driver so maybe that'll be fine... can't help you with that one I'm afraid. This site has info on the in-house ntfs work http://www.linux-ntfs.org/.

1. You can use Mandrake Software Management settings to point to Mandriva 9.2 repositories and update using your system with this tool [search for gtk and update as necessary].

2. NTFS write is still experimental in 2.6 kernel as far as I know. It is still not recommended to write NTFS partitions. If you have enough disk space, format one partition with FAT32. You can read/write from FAT32 partition without problems by both ext3/reiserfs etc and by NTFS.

3. Go to Edit->Preferences dialog in Firefox. In the configuration you will see an option like "Firefox should check whether it is the default browser". Activate this option.

4. The first thing that pops up first is to install ttfonts.

5. You have probably used Gaim which shipped with your distribution. Update your Gaim to the latest version so you will not have problems.
