i know in KDE the utility works with global hotkeys for both noatun and xmms...but i can't seem to find a similar utility for gnome, and i can't seem to find a hotkey plugin for xmms. any insight?

what are you trying to do??? Use terminal commands to control xmms???
if that is it this are some of the xmms commands
Forward = "xmms -f"
Play|Pause = "xmms --play-pause"
Previous = "xmms -r"
Stop = "xmms -s"
just bind those comands to a key and it will work
