How to hide menu bars in gnome

I've seen some cool screenshots where people have a terminal or something open, and the menubar and window borders are hidden. If someone could let me in on how this pretty effect is achieved, please let me know.

thanks in advance.

If you're using Gnome open the terminal right click on the term and click on "show menubar" and it'll hide the menu bar. Is that what you want?

Well actually I meant the menu bar that has the title of the window and the minimize/maximize/close buttons and stuff. I know this isn't gnome but it's a good example of what I've seen before:

Thank you.
