How to get Xandros?

Hi,

I have never tried any Linux ever. One in my family got an Asus Eee 900 which has Xandros and it looks perfect without a desktop.

What do I need and how do I get Xandros without desktop?

What is this "without a desktop"?

Xandros has a custom desktop on the EEEPC. I think it is a commercial distro and you must buy it

You can also download Ubuntu for your EEEPC...from linuxtracker.org or else where. It is possible to install many other distros on the EEEPC too (with light weight desktops like XFCE, fluxbox, enlightenment, ...). Vector linux should be optimal.

Xandros is a commercial product.

If you are looking for a "gadget" type front end try "gOS" at:

gOS 3.0

At least for general purpose usage (that is a normal PC, the kind of thing that 99% of other linux distros run on) Xandros has a commercial (costs money has some added value stuff (codecs?) and with support) and a non-commercial version.

One of the troubles is that if more people knew that there was a zero cost version it would take business away from their commercial version. Hence (or otherwise) the non-commercial version isn't much advertised and is hidden away on their website. Doesn't give me a lot of confidence, but YMMV.

If you mean the simple desktop that is the default of the eee you can try using lxlauncher.

craigevil, that is exactly what I am looking for. Thank you. Now I have downloaded LXLauncher. Do I have to burn it on a disc or can I use USB to install it?

You would need to have a distro installed first to install this thing.

If you can be bothered to read this you'll see that there are some that use it by default.
