How to get Vendor and model name of cpu in different versions of LINUX?

vendor_id and model name in /proc/cpuinfo shows different outputs on different versions.
on RHEL 3.0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz

on redhat72
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
model name : Pentium III (Katmai)

so it should not show model name as Intel(R) in RHEL3.0.
It should just show "Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz".
is there any other method to get vendor_id and model name of cpu that woulg give a consistent format?
thanks
Vidya

Welcome to LQ.

That information will change as the kernels change (there was no such thing as a P4 when RH7 was released). You may get more useful information to compare using the output from dmesg:
dmesg | grep -i cpu

Why not?

This is from a modern distro (Slackware 10.1+) with the latest stable kernel (2.6.13.2):
Code:
bruce@titus:~/iso$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 15
model : 2
model name : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.80GHz
