how to get Linux live CD going?
Hey guys, i need some help badly pls.
my PC crashed and i was told to get a linux lvie CD to be able to save at least the files. so i downloaded Knoppix (7.2.0) and burned it on a DVD. when i try to use it on the computer it doesnt run through - no matter if i try knoppix no3d or other cheats. it ends with the following screen: X.Org X Server 1.12.4 Release Date: 2012-08-27 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.32-5-686-bigmen i686 Debian Current Operating System: Linux microknoppix 3.9.6 #25 SMP preempt sat jun 15 15:27:01 cest 2013 i686 kernel command line: lang=de apm=power-off initrd=minirt.gz nomce libata.force=noncq hpsa.hpsa_allow_any=1 loglevel=1 boot_image=linux nodrm build date: 17 april 2013 11:13:16am xorg-server 2:1.12.4-6 (julien cristau <jcristau@debian.org>) Current version of pixman: 0.26.0 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information. what can i do now? i really need the files... is it the wrong Knoppix version? is there an easier way? oh and its my first time i'm in touch with linux . thx so much for your time edit: iam downloading Knoppix 7.4.2 now and will try it again |
Anyone else not see post #1?
Oh ... there it is ... Plug in the CD and boot off of it. If you downloaded an ISO file, but burned the CD not as a disk image but just putting the ISO file onto the CD, then that's the problem. Otherwise, you'll have to elaborate a bit with your question because a thread title is not a helpful question. |
No post #1 for me...

It sounds like Knoppix might have issues with your graphics adapter. Could you provide the hardware details of the system?

For some odd reason when I opened the thread I saw no post #1 and then I posted my query, to see that become #1, eventually it got moved down the list. Either case, based on what you're seeing, there appears to be a graphics adapter issue and we'll probably recommend a different LIVE distro. |
thx for your answers so far:

I would try the OpenSUSE 13.2 or Mint 17 live ISOs instead.
Also, I know the iso files say "liveCD" or "liveDVD", but they can all (at least all of the ones I've ever tried) be put on a USB drive instead, as long as the machine supports booting from USB, which yours definitely should. If you're doing it in Windows, just use one of the many Linux live USB creators out there (YUMI, LILI, LiveUSB creator, etc). It will probably be a lot faster and more convenient than burning a bunch of CDs. |
I haven't used Knoppix in a while but I used to use it often and it was always very reliable. Surprised that it doesn't boot into a usable system. Plenty of other live distros out there that you can try. But I might look around at knoppix site for any clues because you may have some corner-case graphics card problem that isn't solved by switching distros.

I remember using Knoppix once a long time ago and having to pass video adapter information to it on the boot line. It's been so long that I can't remember exactly what I had to pass, but this link may help: http://knoppix.net/wiki3/index.php?title=Cheat_Codes
