Agreed. This kind of post is ridiculous, since nearly every distro offers their product as a free download, which you can burn yourself (or get a friend to). No sign ups required, and you're already on the site that has the documentation too, if you get it from the source.

That is TOTALLY wrong! Alot of people dont have "fast" internet connection and it could take forever to download a distro! How is it "SPAM", i dont see any spam in that post, do you? Get over yourselves you idiots!

Consider the following:

• svarceneger has a total of 3 posts
• All 3 posts are of the exact same material (do a search if you don't believe me)
• In one of the other posts there's more information: the free CDs are contingent on "supporting" the site referred to. That sounds strikingly similar to "get this free if you sign up for service" advertisements.
• svarceneger also realizes there is a no-URL posting limit, and has consciously taken action to bypass that rule by disguising the URL (no periods to slip it past the filter).

If svarceneger is interested in promoting the site, there is another way: put the website in his signature (which requires that he participate in helping people to get exposure for his magazine site).

If it should be a serious operation, one might consider a more suitable nick.
As I recall, there is more than one Linux Magazine already. It gets messy.

OK then, now that you have pointed out that his other 2 posts are similar then i guess that it IS spam. Sorry. But have a look at how many have veiwed the thread (89 at the moment), there are a lot of people out there who simply cant download a 500 odd meg .iso file. A lot of newbies dont realise that there is a distro on the cover of every second magazine at the newsagent!

I do realize that many poeple cannot download a large file themselves, for various reasons (although I've downloaded or installed from the internet dozens of times while on dialup). I did, however have a few aquaintances that did have high speed access and a burner, so I relied on them sometimes. Many disttros are available for a low cost from the authors' site as well. I fould out about many sites that offer free linux cds (for the cost of the cd and shipping, which is fair) from the debian site. I've even ordered some that way - which was a great way to get set up for about $5.

The point that I was making was more about the blatant advert for a single site (asking for signups), rather than an informative post about where and why you should get Linux. I have, from day 1, always (yes, ALWAYS) read the install guide before even ordering the cds. Everyone who is doing something as serious as installing an operating system should, in this case, RTFM (even if that's the only one they read). If you think about it, how many computer users actually have to install their operating system?

And, one final word about free cds........

I went to the website (linuxmagazine.org). I clicked the google ad. I registered my personal info with the website. But I still don't know how to sign up for the free CD. Anybody know?
