how to get explicit permissions over all partitions so they can be mounted RW?

Morning people, I re-partitioned my HD, and followed the recommendations from other members who said that EXT3 is better for a file storage partition vs FAT32.
OK-but now I cannot access that EXT3 partition-even running as root-so how do I get the permission to access any partition RW whenever I want??
Thanks.

what's the partition name?
is it mounted?
can you manually mount it ?
it's supposed to mount on boot ?
what's the /etc/fstab entry for that partition?
what does dmesg says?
what does fdisk -l says?
what do you mean by cannot access as root ?
where is it mounted ?

OK-here's the partition layout-
Code:
SDA-1=Slackware-12.2(27GB)
SDA-2=Ubuntu-SE-8.04 x86_64(16GB)
SDA-3=SuperUbuntu-8.10(41GB)
SDA-4=Extended (65GB)
SDA-5=Arch'09 x86_64(10.5GB)
SDA-6=Gentoo2008(15GB)
SDA-7=GoboLinux(10GB)
SDA-8=Debian-Lenny(11GB)
SDA-9=Swap(2.21GB)
SDA-10=EXT3-File-Storage(17.5GB)
It's SDA10-but I want permissions across all partitions too.
"fdisk -l" says this-
Code:
Cannot open /dev/sda
Here is /etc/fstab which is probably the problem-I tried editing it, even as sudo(i'm in Ubuntu 8.10)-
Code:
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
UUID=b31c0d39-40e4-4263-9be5-9c1158dff74b /               ext3    relatime,errors=remount-ro 0       1
UUID=9613045c-15c2-4567-b859-d3ba7246b409 none            swap    sw              0       0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
Yes, I can manually mount it, but cannot move files there...
I'm sure I need to edit ALL /etc/fstabs for each distro-is it the same procedure for each one?
DMESG was too long-see next entry...
Thanks!

linus72:

If you are root you can access any file system partition (linux 82-83) as long as you have mounted it properly. Except if you have mounted it as swap, or have configured it hidden under raiserfs or other formats. Or, from what system did try access it, from Windows? it cannot see.

Checklist:

1. Check if you have partitioned it properly; try repartition it if no data is important.

2. Check if no other system is using it or locked.

3. Check that it is not mounted as a swap.

4. See to it that you attempt to access it from a Linux system not from an Xp or other system.

5. Check and try issue commands: "chown username:ugroup file" or "chmod 777 file".

Check back if you need more help.

Goodluck.
