How to get away from the # prompt and to the $ ptompt (yes new to Linux)

Hello,
I'm logging on my server via PuTTY but I'm getting the bash # prompt and I can't call the few commands I know i.e.: lynx

How do I get the more familiar $ prompt?

Thank you

When you are logging in as root, you'll get the # prompt.
Normal users will get $ prompt.

Oh, OK thank you.

So how do I use the lynx command without getting

-bash: lynx: command not found

??

The package that provides lynx is not installed in your system thats why its giving this error, Install lynx on the system to run that command.
