How to get access

I'm the admin in my new Ubuntu 7.4 OS. I want to edit some system text file from the terminal but every time I want to save it It says permission is denied. How do I gain permission to edit these files? This is only my second day with Ubuntu so please give me details of how to fix this.

Prefix the command you are using the edit the file with "sudo" to gain superuser privileges.
