and i tried to install vlc

I've found this:
Quote:
To get a codec to watch DVDs on your Linux machine, simply place a DVD into the computer, and the default player opens (such as Totem or Kaffeine or Xine). If an MPEG-2 decoder is not installed already, the system offers to download and install it. A few clicks of the mouse, and the codec is installed, and the movie player, usually without so much as a relaunch, plays the DVD.

You don't mention what distro you're using so it's hard to be more precise than this. In Arch the package is called libmpeg2. In Debian it's called libmpeg2-4.

a wild guess here ( you DO NOT mention what operating system you are using )
but from the fedora "rpmfustion" repo i am guessing that this is the current Fedora 18

on the top of every fedora forum page is a bold yellow link "Fedora Set-Up Guides"
http://www.forums.fedoraforum.org

the very first link is to Mjmwired
for the current fedora 18
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f18.html
fallow the section
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...l#mediaplayers

No, all you need to do is first, enable RPM Fusion's repositories, both free and non-free. Then do:

Code:
# yum update && yum install vlc phonon-backend-vlc mpeg2dec gpac x264
and add to that line any other package you want.

from the Mjmwired guide
did you install the rpmfusion repo FIRST

to quote the guide ( note the guide has links to the sites for the software)
Also fedora dose not use "sudo" nor is it configured
if you want to use this at your own risk
see the mjmwired section on setting it up
if not use " su -" to become root

Quote:

VLC - VLC is a simpler media player with an easy to use interface. It also supports DVD playback. While most needs should be met with Xine and MPlayer some prefer VLC.

Installation through yum with RPMFusion enabled:

[mirandam@charon ~]$ sudo yum install vlc

DVD Playback: To properly play DVDs please see DVD Playback.

DVD Playback - The libdvdcss is required for DVD playback. Due to non-technical reasons, the package does not exist in the RPMFusion repository. For only this package an alternate repository will be used.

Please use the ATrpms Repository:

[mirandam@charon Download]$ wget http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/files/atrpms.repo
[mirandam@charon Download]$ sudo cp ./atrpms.repo /etc/yum.repos.d/atrpms.repo
[mirandam@charon Download]$ sudo rpm --import http://packages.atrpms.net/RPM-GPG-KEY.atrpms

To install the package:

[mirandam@charon ~]$ sudo yum --enablerepo=atrpms install libdvdcss2

NOTE ATrpms may conflict with RPMFusion hence it is kept disabled.
