Question How to get a Asus Xonar DG sound card to Work on Ubuntu 13.04

Hello all, I have downloaded Linux Ultimate Edition which is based on the Ubuntu 13.04

According to Asus this card (Asus Xonar DG)should work on any kernel after 3.14

http://www.alsa-project.org/main/ind...ix:Vendor-Asus

I have seen it work on the newer Ultimate 4.3 but I don't like the version as it is based on Kde and would like to keep the 3.8 which is based on Mate 1.6

I have looked and I cannot find the information on what kernel Ubuntu 13.04 is using.

Can anyone help me with that and also show me how to update it if I can?

Package manager is not going to work also.

This is a follow-up to the End of Life warning sent last month to confirm that as of today (Jan 27, 2014), Ubuntu 13.04 is no longer supported. No more package updates will be accepted to 13.04, and it will be archived to old-releases.ubuntu.com in the coming weeks.
You are basically running a zombie walking dead distro.

You know what?

Either give this,

http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=lite

or this,

http://www.mepiscommunity.org/mx

a go instead. You will like the videos Dolphin Oracle made on youtube for MX-14 I would think.

http://www.mepiscommunity.org/videos/mx14

The Mepis community is a friendly and sharp minded bunch of folks and will coach you through a newer kernel install also for your sound card (if you need to). The linux-Lite should have the newer kernel for your sound card also. MD5SUM check downloads before burning to cd.

Ahh, thanks for the info. Is it possible to use another desktop on the newer Ubuntu? The reason I ask is because Ultimate Edition 4.3 is based on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Thar tree but it has a KDE desktop and it simply sucks. I would love to get some form of mate on it if I could. That would solve my sound card issues as it runs it fine.

For Mate on Ubuntu 14.04

Secondly, installing the MATE 1.8.1 desktop on Ubuntu will pull in a bit more than just the basics. It features a few extra third-party applications, including Pidgin and HexChat, plus forked versions of Nautilus, image viewer, text editor, etc. If you plan on using it alongside Unity, KDE or Cinnamon then prepare for this muddying of your Dash/app menu.
or just go with the mate distro version instead.

Hey, thanks rokytnji, you are a great help. By the way. This is the Ultimate Edition. Will it erase all my other programs? Or will it just add to them?

Hey there, rokytnji

Well it turns out after surfing the Ultimate Forums that you cannot put a different desktop on their Distro as it will break it.

But I have good news all around. It turns out that Ultimate Edition 4.4 is running Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn tree
with Mate 1.8.1

This is the best of both worlds as it is a newer Distro with a newer kernel for my sound card and it comes with mate 1.8.1

I am downloading it tonight and will play with it tomorrow after work. I'll let you know.

Thanks for all your help.

Talking

I finally did it. I downloaded the right version of Ultimate Edition 4.2 Release Base: debootstrapped (Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Thar tree)
Environment(s): Mate 1.8.0

It turns out that the 4.4 was a complete disaster. Mate 1.8.1 was completely different than anything I had ever seen and it simple sucked. On top of that still could not get my sound card or wifi to work with it.

So when I first got 4.2 going of course the wifi worked out of the box but the sound card did not, but it was exactly what I was looking for. So I did some research and found out that the kernel was 3.13 Only one point off. Go figure. So I did some digging and it just happens that someone else on the Ultimate forum had asked this very same question about updating to a newer kernel 3.17 or something close to that and they laid out all the directions on how to do it. Well I'm pretty new to even basic terminal speech and it took me about ten tries before I got it right. It turns out that because I am booting off a thumb drive my tmp file was in a different place. So I got schooled on a bit of new terminal terminology. After upgrading the kernel it took a bit but finally I got sound. You can imagine how ecstatic I was about this. So then I tried to get online and found out my wifi was no longer working. Ahh the trials and tribulations of Linux. I remember all the patience I had to learn when first learning Windows Anyway, did some more research and found out that this is a major issue with the newer kernels and they still have not fixed it as far as I know. But I did find some work arounds and eventually I got it back up and running. So now I have a fully functional LTE Linux Distro on my thumb drive. I even figured out how to install Pale Moon and today I'm going to work on the profile restore. If all goes well then I will consider doing a dual boot on my XP SSD drive. Right now it's sooooo slow on that thumb drive but if I put it on the SSD then it's gonna fly. 8-) Well I'll update when I make some more progress. By the way, did everyone take the weekend off? I have not heard from anyone in over two days. Hmmmm
