how to fix when testdisk cant recover ext2/ext3?

Hallo;
I am wondering why ext2 or ext3 crashed. I used it to mount /home/gerard/school and it suddenly crashed. Headers maybe. gparted says : unknown format.

I then try to recover these 160g with testdisk; it can see a drive but cannot fix the damages of Idont know the bad writing (why it comes from ??)

anyhow, I am in s***t since 160gb are maybe gone, or let's pray it is jus theaders gone ....

what a bad day, & it 's raining outside !

(no LVM, just ext3 I installed, normal newbie stuffs)

Testdisk simply doesn't do that sort of thing: its task is to restore partitions, not data. If it's the data you need, then you should use photorec instead. And the "unknown format" message is not necessarily alarming. In fact, if you installed in an LVM, it is perfectly normal because LVM is radically confusing for gparted (it can see the LVM but it fails to see anything inside it).

Depending on what you want to recover, you can try using foremost or photorec to recover the actual data. They do well for a lot of personal files. Some people have reported problems with large files like videos.
