Gnome is a desktop,
kdm is a display manager
xterm is a terminal

These are all different things.
Are you asking to determine the desktop or display manager or terminal?

If its the desktop then you will be using Gnome Desktop as you have Ubuntu.
The display manager (default) is gdm for Ubuntu
The terminal is gnome-terminal
