How to find OS and harware architecture


I want find the how many bits my OS and my hardware is

In one machine "uname -a" gives me below output
Linux hqperf-amd04.us.oracle.com 2.6.9-55.0.0.0.2.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed May 2 15:06:32 PDT 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

in other box, it gives me as,
Linux hqperf-amd03.us.oracle.com 2.6.9-55.0.0.0.2.ELhugemem #1 SMP Wed May 2 15:04:06 PDT 2007 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

can some body explain ...
1. How may bits my OS is?
2. how many bits my Hardware is?
3. Can I install a 32 bit OS on 64 bit Hardware?

i386~i686 = 32bit (pentium-class) systems.

x86_64 = 64bit system with 32bit backwards compatibility.

So your first system is a 64bit system with a 64bit OS, and the second one is a 32bit system and OS.

And yes, you can run a 32bit OS on an x86_64 processor.
