servers normally DO NOT have a gui, there is no monitor attached to the server / blade center

if this is a desktop install of RHEL6.0 did you buy the license
http://www.redhat.com/rhel/benefits/
http://www.redhat.com/rhel/desktop/

also did you install gnome ????

if Gnome was installed you would NOT need to run "startx" .
gdm would auto start

is gdm installed ?
is gnome installed ?
if so "startx" is not needed
if for some reason gdm is not auto starting then type in gdm after you login as a normal user in text mode

or are you planning on using a different gui on the server
xfce or something else

Well, since you have a license, why don't you CALL REDHAT SUPPORT, since you're paying for it. They could easily answer this, and give you updates/patches to help get things going.

Actually you are right! I definitely agree with you.
Maybe it asked that question because Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 comes bundled with the GUI (at least as far as I could see).
I had the same curiosity, and I found this thread.

Hi All,

In RHEL 6 when u install OS & don't use the customized option so you will not get the GUI
if you select that option at the time of OS installation you will select the kde of Gnome etc

Following steps can resolve your prob

Quote:
yum groupinstall "X Window System" "GNOME Desktop Environment"

need KDE

yum groupinstall "X Window System" KDE

need XFCE
yum groupinstall "X Window System" XFCE

Thanks
dkpant
