Hi All!

I started off my Linux journey knowledge full of hope and ready to read and learn everything I could.. Hours and hours later, I have sadly lost my positive outlook. One thing I read leads to another and another, resulting in me being even more confused in the end and unfortunately rarely finding the answer to my initial question.

My main issue right now is that I have finally downloaded all of my personal CD's onto my computer... I would now like to create Mixed CD's to listen to on a standard stereo at a different location (my work). I thought I had accomplished this successfully but when I went to listen to the CD I made, the stereo wouldn't even read it.

I am looking for the SIMPLEST, "newbie loving" way to go about this. I have used the "terminal" space to load some things... but have no idea what to enter, or where to get that information on my own.

Another issue I can't figure out (but have heard many different answers to) is: how do I download my friend's itunes music from her ipod to my computer so that I can make other CD's off of those songs as well.

Please help this pitiful, hopeless newbie. Thanks so much..

Hi Trish.
You should mentioned what Linux Operating system you have installed in your computer. There are several media manager to do exacly what you are trying to do. A good burning CD software available is K3B. Perhaps you can do a search in google by typing "how to install k3b in <insert your linux distro here>"

To get music out of an ipod and save the files in your computer in linux you can use Clementine which is a music manager really good, you could use Rhytmbox, Banshee or Amarok Perhaps you already have installed one of these, they all are good and really easy to use. Remember to save the files in m3p format which is whidely accepted by most apliances out there

Make sure you have installed all the media codec you need to manipulated music files and videos too. again it could be easier to help you if you can tell us what Linux Operating System you are using.

My Operating System is Linux Mint 13 Maya

Those last two I understand... these next 3, I don't:

Kernel -- Linux 3.2.0-23-generic
Compiled -- #36-Ubuntu SMP (no idea what that means)
Default C Compiler -- GNU C Compiler version 4.6.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu5)

I don't know if that means I have Ubuntu

It looks like all of my music goes straight to the Banshee Media Player but I don't know how to save it to Mp3 format...
I believe I already downloaded Rhythmbox, but I don't know how to find it and use it after that..

Thank you for your help.... It is quite frustrating to be so clueless sometimes. The wonderful thing that I have come to see with Linux is how amazingly patient and helpful the Linux help areas are. So thank you again for your help!

If the above step works, you can then use K3B, a CD/DVD creator.

Open k3B and select New CD Audio Project

In the top window navigate to where your music files are and drag to the bottom window.

As you add files to the bottom window a time gauge will show the status so you don't go over the 80 minute limit.

Put a blank CD and then click on Burn.

That's it.

PS: If your friend's music are DRM protected this will not work.

regarding your stereo system I guess you should check what music formats the system supports. If your burnt disk has some unsupported formatted files on it, the stereo will just ignore those files. Another issue could be with multisession disks which are unsupported by many stereos as well. I don't remember having experienced any issues other than those. Well, bad cd/dvd disks can cause problems sometimes, but that's rare.

For what I see your Linux Operating System is Linux Mint. That is good because Linux Mint already includes everything you need for media codecs.

Now to install k3b all you need to do is open up Synaptic package manager and install it from there.

All the applications in Linux Mint are organized by category under the applications menu so to open synaptic you just click on the start menu then click on system and look there for synaptic, it will have to be run as administrator so it will ask you for the password.

To see what music player you have you just click on the start menu and click on multimedia and sounds applications you will probably have there rhythmbox or banshee either of these is really good.

these media player are already configured that when you use them to import music all the content is downloaded in the music folder in your user home folder. You can change that behavior if you change the default settings on the media player. You can also change them to use MP3 format when copying CDs or importing Music. I think their default is ogg format which is really good but is not supported by lots of devices out there.

To navigate your folders and files in your computer you have a file browser its icon it will be a file cabinet you can open it from the application start menu either under accessories or under places then you can go to your music folder and see if a folder with the music content from your friend iPod has already been created.

As mentioned above nothing will works if the files your friend has are DRM protected
