How to do the system repair / fsck
 

I use Redhat 2 server , the server suddenly can't boot now , it goes to the grub> mode , it can't boot to Redhat kernel , I am not sure what is the problem , can advise how can i fix it ? do i need to do fsck ? thx

What error message does grub provide on failing?

It just stop at grub> but do not have error message , I can't use the linux command at this mode .

Just all of a sudden?

Sounds like you have a monitor and keyboard set up for this box? You might just try popping in a livecd and poking around, there might be something obvious wrong.

Really odd that this was all of a sudden. Was it after any updates or anything change with the kernel setup?

The server used for long time and do not update anything .

you suggest use the livecd to fix it , if I only have RHEL5 cd , but this server is redhat 2/3 ( I am not sure ) , can I use different version of cd ? thx

Yeah, that would work. Really I'm just saying to get it to boot at all and see if there is anything obviously wrong on the hard drive.

What's the specs on this machine, anyway? Recent or fairly old?

While booted at the livecd, I would open up your grub configuration file and see what the grub command is to boot the linux kernel and try that at the grub prompt (grub>).

While you have the system up, might as well run fsck anyway as you mentioned. It might be a filesystem error. What's the partitioning scheme like?

Anyway, now I'm just grasping for straws. Someone who has experience with RH/grub specifically should really comment on this.

EDIT: I would use RH's support, since that's what you are paying for. It must be a fairly old install though if you're running RHEL 2. They're on version 5 now it seems.
