Depending which certificate you'd like to do.
Anyway, there's another section of this forum devoted to linux certificates.
Read it and you'll probably find answers to your questions.

No ... I've worked for several years as a Linux sysadmin without having a certification (I have a CS degree). However, having a certification would probably help one get a job (it really depends on your background and the exact position being applied for, though).
