List the secure access methods of the machine and by which authentication mechanism one gains enough privileges securely to be able to shut down the machine?

You have to tell us what exactly you are trying to do? And, what you have tried so far?

install samba-common

Quote:
sudo apt-get install samba-common
then execute

Quote:
net rpc shutdown -I IPADDRESS -U USERNAMEPASSWORD
The user must have administrative right

Edit: between USERNAME and PASSWORD you need to add a percent sign the site seems to filter it out

Alternatively, you could use an SSH server on the Linux computer you want to shut down and use Putty on the Windows computer. Most Linux distros should ship with an SSH client that you can use.

Hope this helps!
