How to disable firewall completely
 
Can someone tell me how to disable firewall compeletly and how to

detect whether the firewall is closed?

Hi!

To see all firewall rules, use:
/sbin/iptables -L

To shut down the firewall, use:
/sbin/iptables --flush

(Only root is allowed to do this)

Edit: Sorry, didn't see that you use Debian. The iptables command only works for 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. The 2.2 kernel that some Debians still have uses ipchains instead. The command:
uname -r
should tell you what kernel version you use.
