How To Delete Files When Access Denied?

Hello

I have AntiVir installed and it seems to be running well, except for one thing. I need to change the avguard.conf file in /etc. However, I get access denied errors which won't allow me to delete, trash, or change the name. I need to remove this file and upload a new config file. Yes, I use Konsole as su, and root, but to no avail. I also need to point out that I am very new to Linux, so any help has to be dumbed down for me. How do I delete this file?

Thanks
Harpo

Is it possible that the file is in use? Do you have a command for stopping the program?

To see what is running, you can use System Monitor (may be called something else) in the GUI, or type "ps -e" in a terminal.

also, try changing the permissions before you go trying to delete / move it by typing
Code:
chown root filename
chmod 600 filename
and then it might let you have at it...

I can't believe I didn't think about the file being in use. That's not even a Linux newbie mistake, but just plain dumb. However the problem is now solved. I have managed to delete the offending file (after I shut AntiVir down). I then rewrote the config, and all is well. Thanks for the quick responses everyone.

This is irrelevant; you don't need permissions to a file to delete / move it; you need permissions to the parent directory.
