how to create symbolic link fr command line

Hi,
If I remember correctly I have created symbolic links before. However Im having trouble creating a ln -s for one of my directories in my user directory.

$ bin Documents Dropbox examples.desktop Pictures Templates Videos
Desktop Downloads dropbx Music Public Ubuntu One zippo.tar
I want to create a symlink for 'Public' and place it in Desktop.
How do I do that?
Graphically I can do it ,no problem... From command line I get an error message:
file doesn't exist.. Thanks

Well,

cd into the Desktop directory and execute
Code:
ln -s /pathtopublic/public .
this will create a symbolic link named public.
