How to connect to the Internet on ubuntu using a modem?

Finally i can install ubuntu 9.04 in my laptop,,and now i can enjoy some features of it. But i got one problem,i cannot connect to the Internet using my modem . My modem is an EDGE MODEM (such an old technology modem) and i've tried many ways to make it detected by ubuntu and connect to the Internet. I've tried using pppconfig, wvdial, and some tutorials that i got from internet. As far as i know,,my operating system still can't detect my modem. Anyone knows about this problem? thanks before...

The model and how it connects would help us, such as model 1234 usb and pppoe or what not.

I'm sorry that I don't really understand about the model (pppoe???). When i used that modem on windows, I just plug it in to my usb port then I install the driver that include on that modem. And next, everytime i want to connect,i just need to run the modem's software, click button 'connect', and then connected. Perhaps this information's helpful. thanks.

There's a note for the second step that i dont understand:
--* Note: Pay attention to the line containing 'AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet"'. This might vary depending on your mobile service provider. It would be best to call customer service and make sure you get the 'APN' from them--
My question is: Which one of that part that i need to change it with the APN given by my ISP?? thanks for the responses...

Maybe either gnome-ppp or kppp would help. I had a difficult time setting up my dial-up, but eventually I did get it. Make sure you're a member of the groups dialout and dip.
Code:
sudo usermod -a -G dip,dialout username
