For VLC follow this;its very well documented: http://www.videolan.org/vlc

For Pidgin follow this: http://www.pidgin.im/download/

For above two link select your Linux Distribution and follow the installation instructions provided over there.

Also try to mention your Linux Distribution while posting in the forum

Normally your distro already have both packaged. For example, in Ubuntu, install both with:
Code:

$ sudo apt-get install pidgin
$ sudo apt-get install vlc

... or use Synaptic (or "Ubuntu Software Center") to do the same thing (instead of apt-get)

* all software installed this way (from distro's repo) will receive updates from your distro - downloading and installing software, like you usually did in ms-windows, will not

The OP appears to want to configure VLC and Pidgin, not install them. praveenks, the obvious answer is to read the documentation for those programs. Are you having specific problems with them?

step 1)

wget http://rpmforge.sw.be/redhat/el5/en/i386/rpmforge/RPMS/rpmforge-release-0.5.1-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm

step 2) yum install vlc

I thought vlc was a media player. The OP seems to want a remote desktop.

I think the OP meant VNC
