How to configure ac'97 on mandriva linux 2008

hi there, I'm newbie in Linux but i really want to migrate from windows to Linux. I've got some questions about my sound card. I'm using AC'97 soundcard (i'm sorry i forgot the chipset type) and using a jack sense tech. the problem is the sound card is not working at all. i'm using amarok to test the sound card, it's works fine ( no error message from amarok and amarok seems working)but no sound from speaker (the speaker is in good conditions, it's works fine in windows).

Plz anyone can show me how to solve this problem? Btw i'm sorry if my english not so good cause i'm not from the country where English is primary language.

Mandy 2k8 comes with Pulse Audio enabled. My sound card would not work until I disabled Pulse Audio. On 2k9 ( on another system ) pulse audio works.

Go into MCC, --> Hardware --> Sound Configuration. There is a check box to enable ( or disable ) pulse audio. Give that a try, and let us know.

Failing that, we can dig into the driver that is ( or may not be ) loaded. AC'97 cards should work.

hi camori, i've been try this but i can't find out where is the pulse audio are. There's no such pulse audio or any check box in sound config. There's only text box to enter configuration for ac'97. Btw can you tell me how to configure sound card manually? Or at least can you gave me web address where i could find it?

I've been goggling to find out what is wrong to my sound card, some says i've must recompile my kernel or adding alsa patch (i don't how to patch it(T.T)), but that's not solve the problem.

Hmmm, I didn't notice you are running 2008, not 2008.1 ( spring ). I think Pulse got added at 2008.1. So, if the box is not there, you probably don't have it.

Alsa is the best source of information for sound drivers, installation and configuration. www.alsa-project.org is the url.

The first thing to determine is to see if the modules are loaded. To do that, from a console run the command '/sbin/lsmod |grep snd' ( with the quotes ). This will list the loaded modules that have the string 'snd' in them, alsa modules have that... I hope you see the ac97 modules.

If not, we'll have to see if you have them and lode them with the command modprobe.

You can configure your sound card through MCC. To do that, open MCC -->Hardware-->Sound Configuration. There is an Advanced button, that gives you access to changing the sound driver, troubleshooting etc. Failing that there is also the command line. More time consuming to look up the commands. Post the results of the above, we'll go from there.

Thx for the answer bro, i found the problem is on ac'97 chip. Btw my sound card is ALC 65XX (6550 if i'm not mistaken reading the chip name on my MB, it's so small chip to read wew...) and using intel_8x0 (if i'm not wrong. In Alsa web i found the answer that i must set the AC'97 quirk to enabled (default 0) or using alc_jack to activate jack sense in Sound Config.

I've been doing that but still i don't hear the sound, man.. this get annoyed but on the other side it's gave me chance to learn linux machine (it's very frustating but fun on the other hand ). Btw can you recomended some sound card that you think could work under linux without problem?

For the sound cards, have a look at the Alsa site. There is a long list of cards and drivers that work.

Have you tried to run the command as root user 'alsaconf'? Once you have the driver loaded, the run the command, it does some configuring. Open a mixer, 'alsamixer' should do, and make sure you are not muted, and the volume is turned up.

Try something simple like system sound files, usually .wav files. They do not require codeqs to work. If that works, then try an .mp3. If there are problems then, it is usually the codecs that are not installed.
