Let me start by saying, you've got a lot of reading to do! But to answer your questions, you should either plan to put your machine behind a router that has a firewall on it, or look on the web and find a firewall script that uses iptables to secure your machine. You want to close all ports except for the ones you want accessible to the outside world. If you'll be using this machine as a server of some kind, then some ports will need to be open, but if the machine will simply be a desktop computer for personal use, then you don't need to have ANY ports open.

One of my friends created this firewall script which i use, but it needs a little editing in certain places. It can be found here:

http://www.woosworld.net/pub/rc.firewall

simply chmod +x it, and put it in /etc/rc.d/ and add an entry to it in rc.local.

The data sheet on the modem with some linux stuff in it:

http://ftp.datastream.com.mt/modems/datasheet330.pdf

and for drivers etc, and guides:
