How to compress a folder

Guys, it's the dreaded me again

I need to compress a folder with many files and subfolders. I'm running redhat linux 7.2

I need this file as a zip or tar file, preferred zip format. I've tried the help but I'm reluctant as these are live files with no backup.

Any help in command structure appreciated, as always.

tar -cf destinationfilename.tar directorytobetarred/
