How to completely shutdown from Slackware terminal?

I am an absolute newbie and have nothing but Slackware 13.37 installed on this computer. I do not have, nor want, any type of "desktop" as I am trying to learn Linux commands, not how to point and click. I am finished with my lessons for today and now want to exit the program and shutdown the computer. However, "Quit, Exit nor Shutdown seem to work.

Please do not advise me to install, edit, modify or alter any files in your reply as I am too new to understand such dialog. (We all began somewhere?) I am asking on the logical assumption that the creators of Slackware 13.37, did, in fact, incorporate some command to accomplish what I ask. If no reply received with a few hours, I will be forced to just press the power button until the machine is shut off.

you can shutdown by following command
Quote:

shutdown -h now
or
Quote:

init 0
or
to restart
Quote:

init 6
or may have to become root to run these command

You can also use the commands poweroff and reboot, they will do what their names suggest.
Also, if ACPI is working correctly just a short press on the power-button (not the 4 seconds press) should work.

rahulkya is correct, but you do have to be root to execute those commands.

For a non-root user (I'm logged in as james right now) I can simply press and release the power button. On any recognized hardware made in the last 5 to 10 years that will generate an ACPI power button event that Slackware Linux will respond to by shutting down. Try it.

Also, by default Ctrl-Alt-Delete (the three-fingered-salute) will either power-off or restart, I forget which. ;v)
