well, if you have installed your kernel source, then switch to /usr/src/linux
as root:
run make menuconfig at console (or xconfig in x)
navigate the menus and make sure to select what you need and deselect what you don't
then wher you are finished type
make dep clean bzImage modules
then make install modules_install
this should work
then if you are compiling a new version then you need to edit your boot loader (/etc/lilo.conf or /etc/grub.conf) to point to your new kernel

I've just moved your thread to Linux - Newbie forum. member Intro is a great place to say 'hello' but questions should be posted to other forums.
If you are running LILO, "make install" should save you from having to mess with lilo.conf. Just remember to run /sbin/lilo just before you reboot, or you're computer will be un-bootable!!! Boot disks are your friend here...
