How to compile the kernel?
Hi!
Please, can anybody explain me step-by-step how to compile new kernel? What files do I need? How to make compilation safe and what to do if something goes wrong and system becomes too unstable? Which directories should I backup? Now I'm using Debian Sarge with 2.4.27 kernel. Thanks! |
Here is a nice HOWTO in PDF format.

hello michalceri,
although i haven't read the tuts the other guys are referring to, just like to give a piece of advise that don't mess up with the original kernel files. During the procedure......the tuts may ask you to remove some previous files or to overwrited them......etc etc. but don't do that.....leave them intact and make your own files in some new directory ( what i used to do is make a new directory in /boot ) and in the rest of the procedure keep on specifying the path to your files. This way if some how you make some mistake ( there are bright chances of a newbie making mistake in kernel compilation ) you will still have your original kernel to start again with. regards |
