I was wondering how to close Virtual console 7 (Ctrl+Alt+F7) and exit the x-window.

I was also wondering if all the virtual consoles are linked such that you could close the X-Window from virtual consol 1 (Ctrl+Alt+F1), it has crashed occasionally and instead of restarting It would be good to close it and restart it again.


And another

When I start my Dial up connection and log out, the connection cuts off. is it possible to have the internet connection running in one of the other consols so that you could stuff around with the X-window without loosing your connection, and if so can someone give me an example dial up command from a command prompt.

I am using RedHat 9 by the way

As root, the command should stop X running.
As for the command to dial up your connection I would think that that is very hardware dependant. For example, with the modem I have there are a variety of different packages which install the drivers and so on and they call the same applications different things so the commands to connect have the same basic structure but can vary in the detail, depending on what the different scripts or whatever are called.
