How To Check Traffic Usage/Bandwidth

I have a server running Debian however with the rental of this server i get a banwidth limit is there any way to check how much i have used? The computer is in america and i am in uk so it can only be connected to via shell/root. If there is some command then please let me know in simple terms. Eg exactly what to type and where. I know nothing about linux apart from how to get into root.

Please please please help

Thanks In Advance

Paul

giving zero information about what this server is and what's running on it isn't a great way to get the answers you want... i'd suggest you install (and run...) ntop, which provides a web based interface able to show you historical bandwudth usage logs etc...

All i have on it is bit tornado for seeding torrents and glftpd. The problem is I have no idea how to install anything on the server except in glftpd. Sorry but like I said i am a complete n00b when it comes to this.

ok so still no info at all.. let's just start with a distro..... fedora? redhat? suse? for details about installing software, please check here http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/answers.php

i'm still saying you want ntop personally.

He says his distro is debian :).

Acid,
Where in ntop does it provide you with the total bandwidth you have used? I looked through my ntop and it just shows me the throughput.
