Well how are you trying to copy your pictures to that directory? You need to be root, so therefore, use either sudo, su -c, or log into a new terminal window as root, and use the cp command. This is a very basic command..........

Dendron, I don't know if this will help or not, but when I was on Mandrake/Mandriva I used to change my login box by installing a theme from one of the major themes sites. There was one that looked like a handprint scanner that installed quite well...

Now it seems they're using these .desktop files to do the installation, which won't work I'm afraid.

cp: target `/usr/share/backgrounds/images/image.jpg' is not a directory
I didn't mean for you to copy and paste that exactly, just use it as an example...
Sometimes with me it helps if I put out the full directory string.
I will tell you something else that does not help is those spaces in your file names... while the GUI handles them just fine sometimes it can confuse the terminal on what exactly it is you're asking it to do since spaces are also used to break off commands.
And you are doing this as root and not regular user, right? If not you may want to become root first since you're trying to mess with system files.
Sorry if some of this is redundant, just trying to cover all the bases.
Finally, make sure that you actually HAVE a /usr/share/backgrounds/images directory....
