Right click on the background, and click on "Change Desktop Background."

You can get backdrops from http://art.gnome.org, but it is currently offline. You can also use backdrops from http://kde-look.org.

On Gnome 2.6, the Change desktop wallpaper dialog box has a button that says "Add Wallpaper." This allows you to locate a wallpaper that you downloaded.

The dialog box also has a preview of all the wallpapers that are available, and you can simply click on one and it is set as your backdrop.
