I checked my audacity settings and it has in the audio I/O settings :

-playback : ALSA default
-recording ALSA default
-play other tracks while recording new one : yes
-software playthrough : no

also, just in case.. try to open audacity first and second the source you want to record.

On this machine, Audacity doesn't have "ALSA Default". It has other ALSA choices, but not that one. And... The ONLY way it will record anything is when it's set to OSS /dev/dsp. In Sound Preferences, all is set to ALSA.

I still don't understand how the recording options can vary SO widely. Different versions of ALSA? Different sound cards? Some set-ups have several choices with alsamixer, and others have only a few.

I think that different sound card chipsets provide different devices and functions, and this accounts for much of the variation.

Success

Figured it out. I am able to capture streams with Download Helper in Firefox. It works great. Some of the files are .flv, and SoundConverter isn't too happy with them, I'll figure that part out next. But Download Helper is working great. Life is good here.

I am new to Linux. I had problems with sound. I could not do anything with sound. Have you tried to see if the sound settings are wrong? If you have KDE 3.5 then you can go to the menu and find the multimedia selection where there are some different programs to select that allow you to adjust sound settings. There is a mixer that you can set the sound level to, adjust left and right balance, and adjust recording levels. This may sound like a stupid question from a Linux newbie like me. Do you have the recording sound on "mute"?

I have another question that is a stupid question from a newbie to Linux like me. Can you get any sound from Linux at all? If you play a song, do you hear it playing with headphones or speakers attached?

I'm a newbie also. I'd recommend you start a new thread, as it is a different issue.

My sound has always worked. I'm using Ubuntu, and I double-click the sound icon, or use the keyboard to adjust the sound level. I suggest you start a new thread for your issue.
