How to burn an iso CD for RED HAT
 

Thanks for the help in another thread I have now been able to run MD5SUM (Windows) and verify that I have three good iso files:

shrike-i386-disc1
shrike-i386-disc2
shrike-i386-disc3

I have been trying to burn the CDs so I can install Red Hat and have not had any luck at all. Right now I have about 12 coasters.

Could someone give me a step-by-step on how to burn the CDs for the above files so I can use them to install Red Hat? I'd really appreciate it.

I am running WindowsXp Professional and I have Ahead Nero.

I've signed up for the Linux Class starting next week and I really need to figure out how to get the install CDs created properly.

That's pure recollection: Start Nero, cancel the wizard if activated, choose File -> CD Image. This should pop up a file selection window. Choose "All files", select the first iso and hit OK. Then "Burn" or something similar.

That should do it more or less but maybe you like to decrease burning speed before you start the next attempt.

I have tried what you have suggested. One thing puzzles me when the process started: A "save as" window opened and I was forced to select a location and file name before the "burning" proceeded.

Nero reported the CD was successfully created but it didn't open the tray as is the usual fashion when a new CD is created. The CD thus created seems to have nothing on it. I think the "directory" or whatever is not being created?

I cannot read anything on the CD using WindowsXP and when I try to startup the computer that I want to install Red Hat (the CD-ROM is one of the start-up options) it appears there is no CD and the computer boots up into Windows.

Should I extract the files first?

I have tried that and burned a CD that appears to have all of the files on it but it does not auto-start on boot-up. (Computer is setup to boot with CD-ROM first).

I'm not sure but i thing i used the Alcohol 120% for .iso burning.It is great for any kinda files to burn and make bootable.For Windows OS.

I have been able to burn the Red Hat CDs and Disc 1 did start-up automatically.

However, something seems to be wrong after the Welcome to Red Hat Linux message.

I select the proper language and keyboard and after a period I get the following message:

No Red Hat Linux CD was found which matches your boot media. Please insert the Red Hat Linux CD and press OK to retry.

RETRY just returns the same message. So I'm stuck. :(

I was sort of expecting a question as to where the installation should be placed but nothing like that ever showed up. I have approximately 1/3 of my 80 Gig HD unformatted and reserved for Linux. Someone told me to not format this portion of my hard drive ... that Linux would do it. Does that sound correct?

Did you do the media tests before you started installing? that might give you an indication of the "true" status of your ISO's they might be corrupt even though the burn program said it was successful. I have experienced that...

Been a while since I last installed so I can't remember when in the process the media test is suggested!
