how to auto login


i just wonder if i am able to automatically login to rh 8 linux box just like what windows can?

you can set your system to login automatically to certain user. I think it is using gdmsetup command.

thanks..it helps. i just found that after i created a user aaa but i can't login using aaa, i specified password and make it the user group .
why is that

Anynody know how to do that in console. that gdm thing only works if you set your linux to use graphical login. Whatt about text login?

I don't know if I've understood well....
So, you create a new user, and set it to autologin.
Then, what happens when you reboot your computer?

no, i didn't make it autologin yet.
i just made a user and made it a member of user group
so i reboot, login use that user
invalid user.....

anyways, you don't have to create a new user,
you should have at least one created before, so just set it to autologin.

btw what does it say if you type
ls /home ? --it should list all the users.

May I ask what distribution is in use here? Mandrake, for instance, has a tool to set autologin during the install, but you can also set it from the same tool in the Mandrake Control Center after install is complete. I wouldn't be surprised if RedHat and SuSE had similar tools.

KDE may also have a tool that allows you to set an autologin, but I'm not a KDE user.

Anyway, the distribution might make a difference, so which are you using?
