how to apply ?

i have downloaded a tar.bz2 file and have arked and extracted it, I now have the file itself but where do i put the extracted file to apply it to style, do i drag it or rather put it into style or what????

i though after extracting it that it would appear in the style dialog box and i could just then select it, but that is not the case i have the file but i don't know where to put it to utilize the style on my desktop... ???

thanks

Your post is a little vague. What exactly are you trying to do? Are you installing a KDE/Gnome theme? A program? Please post some more info to help us get started on a solution, thanks.

Themes:

If you downloaded the tar.bz2 file, you should open a terminal shell window, and open the file from the shell with "tar -jxvf <filename>". That particular theme file has an INSTALL file that gives fairly detailed instructions on building and installing that theme. They also recommend downloading the prebuilt theme for your distribution. You should find it at kde-look.org.

Apollon:
You can add a link by right-clicking on the menu button, and opening the menu editor. Or, depending on which distribution you are running, you can install the package for your distro and it should add and icon to your menu automatically.

Which distribution are you running?

yea i compiled, installed using mandriva directions......../config.. then make then make install... all of that and then i exited terminal but i went to theme manager because i thought it would be there so i could apply it to my desktop but it wasn't and now i have installed the software but HOW DO I USE IT??????? is it supposed to run automatically or what ???

After reading some of the feedback on kde-look.org related to this, it appears this is a style, not a complete theme. It only affects certain portions of your KDE environment, not the entire look & feel. YOu should find it installed as a style under look & feel. It also has 3 new entries under color schemes. You may need to reboot XWindows to see the new entries (<ctrl><alt><bkspace>).

Themes include styles icons, backgrounds, screensavers, etc. This is ust a portion of a full theme.

I struggled with installing KDE themes as well at first; the instructions didn't seem to work.

What worked for me was to select the downloaded archive file in the KDE theme manager, without even bothering to extract it: I just selected the archive file itself, and the KDE theme manager recognised it and installed it.

Seems slightly counter-intuitive, but very convenient once you get used to it.
