How to alter Mic settings?

Hey all,

I am using Messenger on Acer Aspire One and i only just realized that when i am on web cam/ video call people can hear me. I don't know how to turn my Mic on and off so if anyone knows how to do this, any advice would be appreciated. :)

holy crap, my mic does work

I've had my aspire one netbook for 9mo and bought it for video chatting when I went on a business trip. I thought the internal mic wasn't working, so I was using an external mic. I stumbled on this post and gave the alsamixer a try and using the record app was able to record sound from my internal mic.

Thanks a lot I will have to try out some things later with skype.

You can use 'alsamixer' from the cli if the device has been configured. Once you do set the settings to a desired point then use 'alsactl store' to save settings.

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture, a Linux kernel component may be useful to gain some understanding.
