How to add new apps/links to the Panel Menubar?
 

Can someone explain to me an easy way to handle the Panel Menubar (is that the name for the equivalent of the Windows Startup Menu?) ? How can I add/remove shortcuts to files/programs in the Panel Menubar? I managed to add/remove an icon to the panel by right clicking on the panel menu bar and then choosing Edit Menus option but I couldn't find how to add a new game to the Games group in the menu. In the help section it states that when you install a new application it is automatically added to the applications menu in a suitable category but it doesn't always happen. In the help menu it explains how to make any of the apps already in the menu "visible" or "invisible but how about the apps not in the menu? I would also want to add not only apps in the menu but links to some other files too (e.g. movie files). Is there an easy way like in Windows (drag and drop the shortcuts in a specific folder?).

you should have a menu edit program in system or somewhere else
i havent try debian 4 yet!!!!
then you should select new item option and enter the command icon and description!!!!!!
at least its like that in debian sarge with gnome!!!
i guest that you are using gnome!!if drag n drop is present i do not know about it

Have you installed alacarte? That one is quite handy if you want/need to edit your menu entries. And yes, you're right, sometimes applications do not get picked up. Ironically, sometimes even the menu editor (alacarte) will not appear on the menus. In that case, you can call it by simply typing alacarte into a terminal, then you can add it to the menu by selecting the desired category on the left and selecting "new item". Fill out the name and supply the command to launch the application in question: for example, /usr/bin/alacarte for alacarte. If you need to know which command is needed, simply use the terminal and type:
whereis [application]
and this will show you the path to the application - which is also the command to launch it.


As for adding movies or other media to the menu (was that it?), I do think it is possible. I seem to remember that I managed to do this on one occasion but I have forgotten how. I guess by specifying a "double" command: first the application to launch, a space, then the file that needs to be played. Have a try and see whether that is correct.

Edit: I just gave it a try using mplayer and a video clip and got it right at once. So it does work. On the downside, it did not launch the mplayer control panel, only the clip.
