How to add fonts ?
 

I'm using linux mandrake 10.0beta2,
there are no fonts of time news romance, arial etc..............as usually found in windows.
where to download it and how to install it?:confused:

You can't get them for free, but if you have Windows you can copy them over. Google for FDU and goto the XFree Font De-Uglification HOWTO - it's great and it tells you everything you need to know

be aware you are running a beta version of Mandrake 10. There will be more software and documentation available in the community release, to be expected very soon.

if there is beta3, do i need to re-install linux ?

there was the rc1 version, and since that, they've released it as mandrake 10 community - which is like the old kooka (cooker) version - which was the public open testing version - but they'll be issuing the updates, probably via mandrakeupdate in your mandrake control centre.

I managed to copy across my windows fonts yesterday. I dual boot, and my XP install is formatted as ntfs, but I just had to go into the mandrake control centre, click on system>fonts then when the window opened, I clicked import.

I then just had to click add, followed by looking into /mnt/windows/WINDOWS/Fonts then just scroll down to the font files that you want (I copied all the .ttf fonts, in batches), then close, then install and let mandrake "do it's thing". It seems to have copied/converted the font's over OK. They seem to be working - the only time I've spotted anything not right, is when I set the menu text in Opera 7.23 to tahoma - this meant that some of the characters wouldn't display correctly (first time I've had that problem) so I just re-selected Luxi Sans [b&h], everything else seems to display in tahoma fine.

A simple way of adding truetype (.ttf) fonts in XFree86 is creating a directory in your homedir called .fonts. Simply copy the fonts to this directory and run fc-cache -v and you should be able to use the fonts, at least in GTK2/XFT-aware applications.
