How to access apache without using its ip address ??

Hi everyone,

I have an apache web server hosting on a ubuntu machine in the LAN. I have been browsing the web site by using its ip address 192.168.1.14 but a friend of mine told me that I can access to it using something like a name like www.google.com or whatever. I tried searching on google and most sites say I need a DNS server. Is there any way of doin it without using a DNS server ??? Thanks in advance.

If you only want to access the server from your LAN,
you can add the name in your hosts file
192.168.1.14 foo.com
or
192.168.1.14 webserver
