how kill a program

can anyone tell me how to kill a program (more specifically mplayer, and sometimes wine-kt)

i used killall and kill but those don't work (they do, but sometimes they cant kill the application, and top says at least 1 mplayer is defunct and another seems fine, but wont terminate

any command that can kill a app that killall cant?

Try "killall -9" -- without going into a lot of technical detail -9 passed to kill or killall means "I really mean it" and does not give the program to to clean up after itself or exit cleanly. You can use "ps aux" to check and see what's still running and if necessary kill -9 an entire list of numeric process IDs.

From watching the movie Tron I get the impression you can kill a program by throwing a frisbee at it really hard.
