How I got back my Ubuntu GUI

Hey all,
I lost the GUI after the upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10
I only had the CLI.

After some research, and help from the pros, this is how I got it back:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop xorg xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-input-all -y
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
I also had the kinit No resume image issue, which I found a fix for by
Code:
sudo swapoff /dev/sda5
(sda5 being my swapfile), then
Code:
sudo mkswap /dev/sda5
then
Code:
sudo update-initramfs -u
The only other thing I had to do was edit /boot/menu/grub.lst after I re-installed the 2.6.27-7 kernel through Synaptic.

I hope that's useful to someone else.

Hello,

Is there any error messages you could attach? /var/log/Xorg.0.log would be good place to start.
There have been some issues with Radeon graphic card. See thread http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...grade.-680377/.

I suppose that "No resume image" is irrelevat to Xservers problem.

Sorry I didn't keep them.
BTW my card is nVidia.

It was more that the thing would only boot to the cli, and the "kinit:no resume image" message was (after research) letting me know that there were different UUID's for the swap drive in the initramfs file than what the system was looking for, hence the need to rebuild it. The system always looks for a resume image after hibernation, reboot etc.
